The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Change Comes After Mixed Reception

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined direction.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full text from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to mind and reimagined the title with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After several months of talks, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having spent the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to persist observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Take on the competition with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, put it on the line, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."

The game lacks an announced release date or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as production continues.
