European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
